Japan Express emerged from a short journey through a few cities and neighbourhoods during the summer of 2023. This is a story less concerned with photographing iconic places in Japan, showcasing their glamour and attractions, or documenting what is already familiar. No pictures of Shibuya’s busy streets, cherry blossoms, city lights reflected in the rain, or drink vending machines.

Instead, this project is the result of what it was like for me to be there. It’s about what quietly kept me connected to the place I was in. The photographs may not depict anything extraordinary on the surface, but those scenes, faces, sounds, and smells held a kind of presence — enough to make me feel alive in Japan.
